Attendance

Regular attendance is important to your child; he/she should be in school every day that health permits. Standard letters are sent to the homes of students after 5, 10 and 15 days of absence. A doctor's excuse is required after 15 days of absence.

Please remember to include your child's first and last name, as well as grade level on a written excuse immediately upon your child's return to school.

See pages 34-39 of the Elementary Parent Handbook.

Temporary Absences

Pupils may be excused from school to participate in an educational trip at the parent's expense. However, a Temporary Absence Form must be completed from the office and returned to school at least ten days prior to the trip. This request must then be approved by the Assistant Superintendent prior to the trip being taken. There will be no retroactive approvals.

See below for the form or page 37 of the Elementary Parent Handbook.

Tardiness

All students will be considered tardy if they arrive after the opening bell. The first ten tardies will be excused if a note from parent/guardian is presented AND the excuse is deemed acceptable by the Building Principal or his designee; or a doctor’s excuse is presented. Upon the eleventh and subsequent tardies, a doctor's excuse will be required for any student to be excused.

See page 37 of the Elementary Parent Handbook.

Medication Procedure

No medication may be given in school unless a medication form is signed by the child's doctor. This form may be obtained from the School Nurse. The medication must be in a labeled pharmacy bottle, not an envelope or baggie. At no time will over the counter medication be given without written order and proper form from the physician. In the event of an emergency or unscheduled sick call, a written note from both parent and physician will be accepted.

Following this procedure ensures the student's health and safety. if you have any questions, please call 946-8397, Extension 5107 for the School Nurse.

Visitors In The Building

All visitor's and parents must first report to the Main Office when entering the building. Also, adults picking up students at dismissal must remain at the school exits until students are dismissed. Adults are not permitted to go to the classroom to pick up students without permission from the office.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Call for Volunteers!!

The Altoona Area School District welcomes volunteer participation in our schools and fully understands the impact parent involvement makes on the education of the child.  There are many opportunities in our schools to actively participate in the educational program.

In accordance with the Child Protective Services Law and Act 15 of 2015, volunteers are required to obtain background checks (PA State Police and FBI Reports) and child abuse clearances (Child Abuse History Clearance).  Clearances are valid for 60 months from the date of issue and must be on file in the school Main Office prior to the volunteer being approved to participate in any activities.
