KINDERGARTEN
Ways to Help Your Child
Read aloud to your child.
Establish a school night routine. Children are more likely to do well at school if their schedule at home is
predictable, manageable and allows for the proper amount of sleep. Talk to your child about his/her learning
experience at school.
Provide varied learning opportunities for your child at home and within the community. Attend school functions,
parent teacher conferences, etc.
Limit time in front of the TV as well as non-educational computer games. Monitor your child's diet to be sure she/he
is getting nutritionally sound choices. Consider replacing "junk" food with healthful selections for snacks.
Help your child make connections between math and the real world -- sort, make patterns, count by ones, twos, fives
and tens. Make sure that your child gets to school on time. If your child rides a bus home from school, please be on
time to meet the bus. Help your child to develop a positive attitude toward school. Watch what you say -- children hear
more than you think! Be sure to send an excuse after each absence.
Please send all money to school in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and the purpose for the money.
FIRST GRADE
The holidays are right around the corner. Even though your schedules are going to be busy, please take time to read with your child. It is the most important thing you can do for your child to help them become a better reader. American Education Week and conferences are coming up soon. Please watch your child’s folder for important information, regarding these events. We can’t wait to show you what we have been learning!

We are finishing up Chapter 5 on place value. Next we will begin working on Chapter 6 which is number concepts and values.
Here students will work with even and odd numbers, skip counting, ordering two-digit numbers to 100, ordinal numbers,
repeating and growing patterns, and problem solving. Chapter 7 involves plane shapes. Students will be introduced to
sides and vertices of plane shapes, angels, quadrilaterals, congruent shapes, symmetry, slides, flips, and turns.

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Reilly 4th Grade Class
Mrs. Reilly's fourth graders are doing a great job! The students have developed a good routine and are managing the
changes from third to fourth grade very nicely. What's ahead? In November, we will be working in Math on multiplication
and division. In Reading, we will continue to focus on good reading habits and quality open ended answers. I was very
proud of the cooperation I saw during our first Science experiment in our electricity chapter, and I look forward to
conducting more experiments as the year progresses.
To me, communication between home and school is vital. There are several ways to contact me; by phone at 946-8397 ext 5138,
by email at lreilly@altoonasd.com, or simply write a note in your child's
homework notebook which I check daily. I look forward to working with you for the remainder of the year.
