Ways to Help Your Child
Read aloud to your child.
Establish a school night routine. Children are more likely to do well at school if their schedule at home is
predictable, manageable and allows for the proper amount of sleep. Talk to your child about his/her learning
experience at school.
Provide varied learning opportunities for your child at home and within the community. Attend school functions,
parent teacher conferences, etc.
Limit time in front of the TV as well as non-educational computer games. Monitor your child's diet to be sure she/he
is getting nutritionally sound choices. Consider replacing "junk" food with healthful selections for snacks.
Help your child make connections between math and the real world -- sort, make patterns, count by ones, twos, fives
and tens. Make sure that your child gets to school on time. If your child rides a bus home from school, please be on
time to meet the bus. Help your child to develop a positive attitude toward school. Watch what you say -- children hear
more than you think! Be sure to send an excuse after each absence.
Please send all money to school in an envelope clearly marked with your child's name and the purpose for the money.
FIRST GRADE
In the upcoming spring months, take some time to appreciate your child for his or her abilities and talents. Allow them opportunities to showcase and share these. This will help them to become more confident. Confidence is vital for beginning, emerging, and established readers. The more your child reads, the more he or she will become more fluent and develop vocabulary. These are very important skills for second grade. Continue to work with your child on reading fluently. You can time them on reading words or stories. Utilize the book bags that are sent home with the students. These are familiar books that your child is successful at reading. First grade will begin to send home math homework this semester. Please be looking for it in your child's folder. Keep working on those math facts to 10, and if possible, increase them to 12. THANK YOU!
