Established Principal Miss Susan Richardella to Retire
Miss Susan Richardella has been principal of Pleasant Valley Elementary for 9 years. She has served the Altoona Area School District for 24 years, teaching or leading as principal at the following elementary schools: Ebner, Baker, Logan, McCauliffe Heights, and finally Pleasant Valley.
Here are some things her devoted staff will miss about her...
She understands the "little" people because of running her own preschool.
Her screams, cheers and tears over our classroom lessons and smiles for our learners!
“Gift of Time” = priceless
Her opening day assemblies - How she shares terrific children’s literature with our students. What a great way to start us all out on the road to a wonderful year of literacy. Having the principal talk about reading and how she loves books was inspiring for the children and a great model to follow.
A poem for this poet:
You did everything you could
To help our students shine.
Despite the nasty challenges,
No one has ever heard you whine.
Thanks for being a principal
So passionate and caring.
We are all at a loss
Now that you are retiring.
"Gift of Time," catered dinners/lunches (from the principal’s pocket). She always trusted us as professionals in the classroom, and she never forgot what is like to teach and be in the classroom.
Her smiling face and how she supported us through tough times.
WE WILL MISS YOU, MISS RICHARDELLA!
Pleasant Valley Elementary School Honored as a
2015 Distinguished Title 1 School for Second Year in a Row!
Principal’s Thoughts: I could not be more proud of our learners and faculty as our fabulous school has been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a Title I Distinguished School for the 2015-16 school year.
A year ago, we were honored by PDE as a High Achieving Reward Title One School. I am blessed to be the instructional leader of a school where teachers believe in education, where parents support the home-school relationship and where our learners come to school to learn.

|The focus for the 2015-2016 school year will be READING, READING, READING! Teachers have received professional development with Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments so that they can identify the instructional reading level of every child and plan instructional groupings accordingly. Once each child's level is determined, a Balanced Literacy approach will be how the learners will receive instruction.|
